Review: By Your Side by Kasie West

ReviewTime3

Another of the books we said we would never read and review here on Books, Boxes, and Baubles! Two left after this one! The end is near for Neko, so excited!!

So Twilight, I made it twenty minutes into the first movie and had to turn it off, way too boring for me. Let’s see how I fared with the book…

Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

My Thoughts:

Man this book really wasn’t what I expected.  The only thing I’d heard before reading this was “a girl was locked in a library” and my first reaction was “that would be AMAZING!!!!”.  Obviously in reality it probably isn’t the best thing in the world but one can dream.

Something I loved about this book is how it dealt with relationships.  I think it was fairly predictable on how things played out but Kasie did a wonderful job showing Autumn and her struggles with anxiety and Dax and his life and the two of them navigating this new friendship after the experience in the library.  They weren’t suddenly these best friends but they also had this strong bond.

I also really appreciated that she took the time to write out her struggle with sharing her anxiety with her friends. Yes, it’s something we should all feel comfortable being open with but it’s scary and you never know how people will react and being that vulnerable takes an immense amount of bravery.  I’m glad there was such a positive reaction as well.

Anyways.  What did you guys think of this book?
